GBPUSD shows how many US dollars one British pound buys. If the chart reads 1.2700, one pound costs 1.2700 dollars. When the line rises, the pound is strengthening against the dollar; when it falls, the dollar is strengthening. Traders often call the pair cable, a name that dates back to the 19th-century transatlantic telegraph cable that carried the exchange rate between London and New York.
Use the timeframe buttons at the top of the chart to switch views. Short timeframes such as 5 or 15 minutes show intraday noise and reactions to news. The 1-hour and 4-hour charts show the swings most short-term traders watch, and the daily chart shows the wider trend. Each candle shows the opening, highest, lowest and closing price for that period.
A pip is the standard unit of price movement, 0.0001 on GBPUSD, so a move from 1.2700 to 1.2730 is 30 pips. The spread is the gap between the buy and sell price your broker quotes, and it is a cost on every trade.
Both pairs are priced against the US dollar and have the same pip value, but they tend to behave differently:
| GBPUSD | EURUSD | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical movement | Often larger daily ranges and sharper moves | Usually steadier, more gradual moves |
| Typical spread | Often slightly wider | Usually among the tightest available |
| Main central banks | Bank of England and US Federal Reserve | European Central Bank and US Federal Reserve |
| Key data | UK inflation, jobs and GDP; US data | Eurozone inflation and PMIs; US data |
Larger swings can mean larger gains and larger losses for the same trade size, which is why many traders use smaller positions or wider stops on GBPUSD. Compare it with the EURUSD live chart.
Forex trades around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening, but activity is not even. GBPUSD is usually most active, with the most liquidity (buyers and sellers in the market), once London opens, and especially when London and New York are both trading.
| Session | Local hours | UK time (approx.) | What it usually means for GBPUSD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 08:00–17:00 | 22:00–07:00 | Week opens; generally quiet for GBPUSD |
| Tokyo | 09:00–18:00 | 00:00–09:00 | Often narrow ranges; spreads can be wider |
| London | 08:00–17:00 | 08:00–17:00 | The pound's home session; UK data is usually released at 07:00 UK time, just before |
| New York | 08:00–17:00 | 13:00–22:00 | US data and Federal Reserve news |
| London–New York overlap | – | 13:00–17:00 | Typically the busiest window of the day |
UK times shift by an hour for a few weeks in spring and autumn, when the UK, US and Australia change their clocks on different dates. The session clock above always shows the current position.
GBPUSD reacts most to news about interest rates and inflation in the UK and the US. These are the releases to watch. Check our economic calendar for exact dates and times.
| Event | Who / how often | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bank of England rate decision | Monetary Policy Committee, eight times a year, at 12:00 UK time | Sets UK rates; the vote split and guidance often move the pound as much as the decision |
| FOMC rate decision | US Federal Reserve, eight times a year | Sets US rates; the biggest scheduled driver of the dollar |
| UK CPI inflation | Office for National Statistics, monthly | Shapes expectations for Bank of England rates |
| UK labour market | Office for National Statistics, monthly | Unemployment and wage growth feed into inflation and rate expectations |
| UK GDP | Office for National Statistics, monthly and quarterly | Shows whether the UK economy is growing or shrinking |
| US Non-Farm Payrolls and CPI | US jobs report (usually the first Friday) and inflation, monthly | Shift expectations for US rates and the dollar |
Around these releases, spreads can widen and prices can jump past stop levels (called slippage). Many traders and automated systems reduce activity in the minutes either side of high-impact news.
GBPUSD is one of the most traded currency pairs in the world, according to the Bank for International Settlements' Triennial Survey. Because the US dollar is the second currency in the pair, the pip value for a US-dollar account is the same as on EURUSD.
A cent account is a real-money account where balances are shown in US cents: a $100 deposit appears as 10,000 cents and each pip is worth far less. It lets traders test live execution with smaller amounts, although it is still real money and carries the same risks.
Nexus is a rules-based Expert Advisor (EA), software that trades automatically in MetaTrader 4 or 5 and only opens a position when its rules are met. The Nexus GBPUSD EA is supplied together with the Nexus EURUSD EA.
Our public real-money Myfxbook account runs the EURUSD EA only; there is no public live GBPUSD record. The way to judge the GBPUSD EA is to run it on your own demo account for 60 days, free, and watch how it handles the pound's larger swings, including its losing periods.

The name comes from the transatlantic telegraph cable laid in the 19th century, which carried the pound to dollar exchange rate between London and New York.
Usually from the London open and especially during the London–New York overlap, roughly 13:00 to 17:00 UK time. Activity is generally lower during the Asian session and late on Friday.
Mainly the gap between UK and US interest rates and expectations for them: Bank of England and Federal Reserve decisions, inflation data, jobs reports and GDP. UK political news and wider risk sentiment can also move it sharply.
For an account in US dollars, one pip is worth $10 on a standard lot (1.00), $1 on a mini lot (0.10) and $0.10 on a micro lot (0.01). On a USD cent account, one pip on 1 lot is worth 10 cents. Use the calculator above for your own trade size.
